Dr. Jonathan Eyal holds the positions of Associate Director for Strategic Research Partnerships, International Director, at the Royal United Services Institute, and Editor of the RUSI Newsbrief. Dr. Eyal was born in Romania and he spent most of his life in the United Kingdom, being educated at universities from London and Oxford. In 1987 he received his doctorate at the University of Oxford, with a thesis on the relations between ethnic minorities in Eastern Europe since the end of the First World War. Dr. Eyal is the author of a book concerning the military expenditures in the Warsaw Pact and conducted a study on the Balkan military relations during the Communist regime. He is a regular contributor on matters regarding East European Affairs for newspapers such as The Guardian, The Independent, The Times and The Observer. He advised the House of Commons Foreign Affairs Committee on matters related to the British foreign policy in Eastern Europe, bringing his contribution to the peace plans between the former Yugoslav countries. Dr. Eyal can speak fluently English, French, Romanian, Italian, Hungarian and German.
